Facelift Surgery / The Face Lift Procedure

The facelift is becoming one of the most popular facial rejuvenation procedures requested. Although in the past the over-corrected or "plastic" look was all too common, today, a skilled surgeon can produce beautiful, natural-looking results. With meticulous attention to tightening and repositioning muscle and skin, in addition to sculpting and repositioning facial fat, Dr. Tarshis creates a rested, youthful, long-lasting natural-looking result. Many patients look as many as 5-10 years younger and, best of all, instead of looking "lifted", today's patients simply look refreshed, rested and healthy.

Friends usually won't know about your facelift unless you tell them. They will recognize that you look better but they won't know why. They'll ask if you have been on vacation. Did you lose weight? What exercise program are you on? With today's new surgical techniques and technology, facelifts now last longer than ever before. The basic idea behind a facelift is to remove excess skin that is loose and sagging on the face and the neck, and to tighten the underlying tissue. The excess skin that is removed never returns, so you will always look younger than you would have without surgery. The skin does continue to age, however. When new sagging develops, you may, if you choose, have a minor "tuck-up" procedure to correct it. Dr. Tarshis will help you decide if a "tuck-up" is needed.

“Every man and woman deserves the chance to turn back the clock.”

Dr. Tarshis begins with an incision along the hairline, from the temple, down around the ear lobe and to the back of the ear. After separating the skin from muscle and fat underneath, it is then pulled up and back, and the excess removed. Sagging muscles and tissues can also be tightened, and fat deposits can be removed or repositioned to produce a more youthful shape to the face.

Every effort is made to keep the scarring as minimal and concealed as possible. The incisions are closed along the skin's natural lines and creases, but some scars are unavoidable. Usually they fade gradually and become barely noticeable.

After surgery, you will stay overnight in our recovery room with your own private nurse. Your dressings will be removed in the morning. Any pain or discomfort you experience can usually be controlled with mild medication. Swelling and bruising will usually subside within a week or two. You may experience a certain numbness or tightness in your face or neck which will subside as you heal. Your final result probably won't be realized for at least several weeks.

You will need to limit your exposure to the sun for the first few months after surgery. This is particularly important if laser skin resurfacing has been done at the same time.

Overall, the goal of a facelift is to make you look more like you used to. By tightening the skin and underlying tissue, wrinkles, creases and lines are eliminated, and the younger, natural contours of your face are restored. Your face will look the way it used to look 5 or 10 years ago.
